These actors, on the other hand, either try way too hard, or not hard enough, and embarrass themselves … and us.
But actors such as Eric Stonestreet ( Modern Family) manage to inject warmth, heart, and sincerity into the theatrics. Most of these performances rely on cliche and stereotype, and to be fair, a lot of our favorite gay performances from straight actors do lean heavily on the flamboyant. Straight actors who crashed and burned attempting to play gay.
So we decided instead to sharpen our knives and make a list that’s a hell of a lot more fun. No, not really. Our post about gay actors playing straight characters got us thinking about the flipside, straight actors playing gay characters.īut a list of straight actors successfully playing gay would be obvious ( Tom Hanks, Heath Ledger, Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and frankly dull. Is there a criteria for joining the “gay skinheads”? There are some guys who choose to wear leather and latex but most of us just wear our usual. Personally, I wear my standard gear boots, bleaches and braces. What would you wear to a gay skinhead event? Beyond the sexual side of things it’s also the enjoyment of being friends and spending time with other skins too. I am attracted to the extrovert nature of the skinheads and the dominating image. Sex has a lot to do with power and the skinhead image is a powerful one. I think for the majority of gay skinheads it is a fetish. Sadly, the terms skinhead and racist are interchangeable for some people but if you look at the roots of the skinheads and even more recently the two-tone movement, there was actually a lot of mixing between different races. I’d say it’s the same ratio that exists within the gay community as a whole. Within the gay skinhead community there are some racist, though the majority aren’t. Its a reflection of the general population, people have lost faith in the politics and its no different for me. Well, most gay skinheads aren’t really that interested in politics.
They are more into house and dance music than ska and reggae. I think most people involved don’t even know what kind of music is traditional associated with skinheads. The music is not so relevant in the gay skins scene. Come Sunday night they switch back to business mode ready for work Monday morning but that not for me. I know several guys who live Monday to Friday as professionals and businessmen but come Friday night after work they change into their skinhead alter ego. You got to bed a skinhead and you wake up one. Is it something you live by everyday or is it an alter ego?įor me it’s hard to be something part-time. It’s a way of life an attitude and closeness with the other members of the group. It’s about more than just being attracted to other skins, the clothes and the cropped hair. What does it mean to you to be a gay skinhead? To spite todays image of skinheads being one of racism and violence the original subculture had members of many ethnic background and today there still remains skinheads who preferred the original mod-inspired styles and ethos. From 1979 onwards, punk inspired skinheads with shorter hair, higher boots and less emphasis on traditional styles grew in numbers and grabbed media attention, mostly due to football violence and an association with these racist groups. It wasn’t until the styles revival in the late 1970s that the skinhead image became affiliated with far right groups such as the National Front and the British Movement. This cultural cross-pollination became commonly known as skinheads around 1968. They frequented SKA sound system shows and had a reputation of being extremely violent. The “rude boys” were Jamaican gangster who wore suits and pork-pie hats to imitate the rich.
#INTERVIEW GAY POR N MODS#
The hard mods began as a counter to the peacock mods who were less violent and always wore the latest expensive clothes. These “hard” mods were identified by their shorter hair and had working class image. They derived from mixtures of a sub group of the “mods” known as “hard” mods and West Indian “rude boys”. Skinheads are a subculture that originate among the working class youths of the United Kingdom during the 1960s.
